The rounded profile removes the square corner where dirt builds up, and the smooth, non-porous surface is easy to clean. That is why the wall-floor juncture is a good place to start a walk-in cooler renovation. With the CoRound™ system, three things change on the job site. No sealant line required along the wall. Pre-formed corners, no silicone-filled field cuts. No resin or cement to cure. At the door, a PVC cove base also works as a thermal break.

How do you renovate the inside of a walk-in cooler? If the panels are sound and the room still holds temperature, a walk-in cooler renovation can focus on the surfaces: the walls and the junctions of the room. A rigid PVC cove base fits that job, because it installs on the finished floor. Also, there is no resin or cement to cure.

When Is a Renovation Enough?

Start with the walk-in cooler itself. If the room still holds temperature and the door closes well, look at the surfaces inside: the base of the walls, the corners and the wall finish.

However, some signs point beyond a walk-in cooler interior renovation. For example, the panels feel soft, the metal skins show rust, or the room no longer holds temperature. In that case, talk to a refrigeration contractor first.

For a new walk-in cooler, Panelmart also sells GlobeWall insulated panels: read our guide to symmetrical insulated panels. The panel crew can install the profiles: no separate flooring or welding crew to schedule.

Why Do the Corners Matter in a Walk-In Cooler?

Square corners can trap dirt and water, and that is where bacteria can grow. A rounded profile leaves fewer of those spots and makes them easier to wash out.

FDA Food Code §6-201.13 requires floor and wall junctures to be coved and closed to no larger than 1 mm (1/32 inch) where floors are not cleaned by water flushing, and coved and sealed where they are. Check requirements with your local health department.

Which Walls Can Take a Rigid PVC Cove Base?

Installs on insulated panels, FRP-covered walls, tile, masonry and drywall. For example, on standard cold storage panels with mesa or wide-rib profiles, the flexible lip follows the ribs.

In a walk-in cooler retrofit, the walls are already there, so check them first. They need to be sound, dry and reasonably flat. Otherwise, a new cove base can hide the problem for a while, but it does not fix it.

What Does “No Sealant Line Required Along the Wall” Mean in a Walk-In Cooler?

Exposed sealant can need cleaning and, over time, redoing: each time that means a service call, material and labor. With CoRound, no sealant line is required along the wall.

Silicone is optional: not required for installation. For the CoR Skirt, in wet areas, installers can add a thin bead of neutral silicone to help keep water from getting behind the profile.

In addition, straight lengths meet at a joint piece, columns take pre-formed outside corners, and each run stops at an end cap at the door: no miter cuts to fill with silicone.

Can a Walk-In Cooler Stay in Use During the Renovation?

In a room already in operation, CoRound can be installed on the finished floor: there is no floor to redo and nothing to cure.

By comparison, a resin cove is usually part of the floor job: the room is cleared and waits for the resin to cure. CoRound is a wall job: it installs on the finished floor, and the room can stay in use.

For more on resin, see our guide to epoxy curing time.

What Do You Need for a Walk-In Cooler Renovation?

First, measure each wall where the cove base runs. Then count the inside corners, the outside corners and the door openings. Next, note the wall type, and pick the color.

Tools: tape measure, level, drill and a cutting tool. Installing CoRound is one pass along the wall: fasten the profile and snap in the corners.

The CoR Skirt is screwed or riveted to the wall, or bonded with adhesive: installer’s choice. These instructions are general installation advice: the installer chooses the method that suits the job.

What Happens at the Door of a Walk-In Cooler?

PVC conducts far less heat than metal. At doors, where warm air comes in, a metal cove base acts as a thermal bridge: it carries the cold right to the edge of the opening, where condensation and ice tend to form. A PVC cove base works as a thermal break: much less condensation and ice at the door.

Then, at the door itself, an end cap closes each CoR Skirt run.

Why Choose Panelmart for a Walk-In Cooler Renovation?

  • No sealant line required along the wall: one less step on site and, as a result, one less cost that can recur.
  • Pre-formed corners, no silicone-filled field cuts: the curve comes from the factory, not from the installer’s hand.
  • No resin or cement to cure: there is nothing to mix, trowel, weld or cure.
  • Thermal break: a PVC cove base at the door.
  • Repairs by the length. A damaged length can be replaced on its own: the rest of the run stays in place.
