The rounded profile removes the square corner where dirt builds up, and the smooth, non-porous surface is easy to clean. In Florida commercial kitchens, for example, that matters from the cook line to the walk-in cooler. So, this guide looks at the cove base for Florida kitchens. With the CoRound™ system, three things change on the job site. No sealant line required along the wall. Pre-formed corners, no silicone-filled field cuts. No resin or cement to cure.

What should a cove base for Florida kitchens do? Above all, it should replace the square corner at the floor with a curve. With CoRound, the CoR Skirt sanitary base does that job. The surface is smooth, non-porous and easy to clean. In addition, the color runs through the PVC: a hit or a scratch shows the same color, and there is no paint or coating to chip.

Why Does a Cove Base Matter in Florida Kitchens?

Square corners can trap dirt and water, and that is where bacteria can grow. A rounded profile leaves fewer of those spots and makes them easier to wash out.

FDA Food Code §6-201.13 requires floor and wall junctures to be coved and closed to no larger than 1 mm (1/32 inch) where floors are not cleaned by water flushing, and coved and sealed where they are. Check requirements with your local health department.

How Do Pre-Formed Corners Help in a Kitchen?

Of course, a kitchen has columns, door openings and inside corners. Straight lengths meet at a joint piece, columns take pre-formed outside corners, and each run stops at an end cap at the door: no miter cuts to fill with silicone.

In addition, the curve comes from the factory, not from the installer’s hand: it is the same all the way around the room.

What Does the CoR Skirt Do at the Base of the Wall?

To begin with, the CoR Skirt sanitary base covers the wall-floor juncture. In addition, flexible co-extruded lips press against the wall and the floor and follow small surface irregularities, closing the juncture.

CoRound installs on insulated panels, FRP-covered walls, tile, masonry and drywall. In a kitchen, for example, that includes FRP and tile.

What Does “No Sealant Line Required Along the Wall” Mean?

On ribbed panels, a metal base usually needs a bead of sealant along the wall: a second step, and exposed sealant can turn dark and attract dirt over time, leaving a dark line between a white wall and a white base. With CoRound, no sealant line is required along the wall.

Moreover, on standard cold storage panels with mesa or wide-rib profiles, the flexible lip follows the ribs. As a result, the flexible lip minimizes gaps along the wall, with no sealant line required.

In short, that is one less line to keep clean along the base of each wall.

Rubber, Tile or Rigid PVC: Which Cove Base for Florida Kitchens?

To begin with, the CoR Skirt is a rigid PVC cove base. Unlike a rubber base, it can be screwed or riveted to the wall, so it doesn’t have to depend on adhesive. More in our rubber cove base comparison.

By comparison, a tile cove base has grout lines, and grout can hold dirt and moisture. CoRound profiles have a smooth PVC surface with no grout lines. See our quarry tile comparison.

Besides, with a resin or tile cove, a repair can mean cutting out a section, redoing it and waiting for it to cure.

Can a Cove Base for Florida Kitchens Go In on the Finished Floor?

With CoRound, yes. In a room already in operation, CoRound can be installed on the finished floor: there is no floor to redo and nothing to cure.

In contrast, a resin cove is usually part of the floor job: the room is cleared and waits for the resin to cure.

For more on resin, see our guide to epoxy curing time.

What About the Walk-In Cooler?

The same profiles also go in the walk-in cooler. Operating temperature: −4 °F to +140 °F. For colder applications, contact us.

PVC conducts far less heat than metal. At doors, where warm air comes in, a metal cove base acts as a thermal bridge: it carries the cold right to the edge of the opening, where condensation and ice tend to form. A PVC cove base works as a thermal break: much less condensation and ice at the door.

Designed for walk-in coolers, food plants and commercial kitchens. For more, read our cold storage cove base guide.

Why Buy Your Kitchen Cove Base From Panelmart in Florida?

In summary, here is what CoRound brings to a kitchen:

  • No sealant line required along the wall: one less step on site and, as a result, one less cost that can recur.
  • Pre-formed corners, no silicone-filled field cuts: the curve comes from the factory, not from the installer’s hand.
  • No resin or cement to cure: there is nothing to mix, trowel, weld or cure.
  • One system for the whole room: base track, sanitary base or heavy-duty curb, cove base for wall and ceiling junctions, pre-formed corners, end caps and corner guards, all made to fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need silicone to install CoRound?

Silicone is optional: not required for installation. However, for the CoR Skirt, in wet areas, installers can add a thin bead of neutral silicone to help keep water from getting behind the profile.

Can you replace a damaged length?

A damaged length can be replaced on its own: the rest of the run stays in place.
